Knuth
Which TAOCP edition do I need?
The current editions are Volume 1, 3rd edition (1997); Volume 2, 3rd edition (1997); Volume 3, 2nd edition (1998); Volume 4A (2011); and Volume 4B (2023). For Volumes 1 to 3, an older used edition works for most of the material. For the eBook, buy the PDF from the publisher; Knuth himself warns that the Kindle and ePUB versions mangle the math.

| 3: Sorting and Searching | 2nd | 1998 | 1973 |

Dates are from Knuth's own TAOCP page. Volume 4, Fascicle 7, Constraint Satisfaction (2025), is the first part of the coming Volume 4C; it is not on the cracked.guide path yet.
Is an older edition fine?
For Volumes 1 to 3, mostly yes. Section numbers barely changed, so the cracked.guide guides still line up. The newest editions fix errors, update the history and add exercises, and Knuth keeps reprinting with corrections, so newer printings are better. Volume 1's 3rd edition is the one he urges people to get over the 2nd, because of the many refinements.
Volumes 4A and 4B have only one edition. The paperback fascicles that preceded them are earlier drafts of the same material; they are fine for a look but not a substitute.
PDF, not Kindle
Authorized PDFs of every volume are sold through InformIT, the publisher's store. Knuth's site is unusually blunt about the other formats: he says the non-PDF versions are "frankly quite awful" and not to buy the Kindle edition if you expect the math to make sense. Take him at his word.
Cheapest legal options
- Borrow first. Many public and university libraries include O'Reilly Learning, which carries TAOCP. Libby/OverDrive and interlibrary loan (search WorldCat) work too.
- Used older editions of Volumes 1 to 3 often go for $10 to $30 each.
- The boxed set of Volumes 1 to 4B is about $260 new and the best value if you want them all new. Registered owners can download a collected index from the publisher.
- MMIX: Volume 1 Fascicle 1 covers MMIX, the 64-bit machine used from Volume 4A on, and Knuth's site has the MMIX material free.
The gear page has every option with prices checked by hand, and what the whole path costs.
Questions
Is the TAOCP boxed set worth it?
If you want all five volumes new, yes: it is cheaper than buying them one by one. If money is tight, borrow or buy used older editions of 1 to 3.
Does the edition matter for the exercises?
Slightly. Exercise numbers in Volumes 1 to 3 changed little between editions, but newer ones add and correct a few. The cracked.guide picks follow the current editions.
Is there a free legal PDF of TAOCP?
No. Knuth publishes drafts of new material (pre-fascicles) and errata free on his site, but the volumes themselves are sold.
